How whitening Works

The basic whitening process works by oxidizing the organic colored material within the tooth, reducing its color intensity. The process doesn’t weaken the structure of teeth, but it can cause some sensitivity.

The most commonly used agents in the whitening process are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. Carbamide peroxide breaks down to hydrogen peroxide and urea, and the hydrogen peroxide further breaks down to water and oxygen. The peroxide diffuses through the enamel into the dentin where it has the greatest effect on the color change of the tooth. A higher concentration of peroxide achieves faster results. You can expect similar final results from products with less concentration if you increase the frequency of application or contact time.

What causes discoloration of teeth?

There are many causes. The most common include aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, colas, tobacco, red wine, etc. During the formation of teeth, consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.

Am I a Good Candidate?

When the interior portion of your tooth, called dentin, absorbs colors and becomes stained, your entire tooth may look darker or take on a yellowed or brownish cast. Because no amount of brushing or at-home teeth whitening options will provide the results you desire, come in for a visit to discuss your best teeth whitening options. As long as you have a smile full of natural teeth, we can help you brighten your smile. However, if you are looking for a whiter smile but whitening is not an option, we will discuss cosmetic veneers as an alternative solution.

What If I Have Sensitive Teeth?

Many patients have sensitive teeth and worry that teeth whitening will increase sensitivity or damage the structure of their teeth. Fortunately, our chemical processes have a neutral pH and will not adversely affect the integrity of your teeth. Your enamel will remain intact. In some cases, teeth whitening techniques have been known to increase sensitivity or cause mild discomfort during a procedure. We will take every precaution to help you avoid discomfort, protecting your gums and any over-exposed portion of your teeth. For particularly sensitive individuals, we may administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. After the procedure, if your teeth still feel sensitive or uncomfortable, we will offer you toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth. You may also address discomfort with over-the-counter pain medication until sensitivity subsides. Post-treatment sensitivity typically lasts no longer than 24 hours.

Is there any difference between over-the-counter teeth whiteners and professional in office Teeth Whitening?

Yes Whitening at home is a slower process, but this is often beneficial for those who are sensitive to periods of long-term exposure to bleaching. Or, if you have a packed daily schedule, you can simply fit your teeth whitening into your day wherever it fits. Our team will create custom-fit trays. You will apply the instructed amount of gel into the bleaching trays and place them over your teeth for 10 to 14 days for approximately 1 hour a day.

Can I Eat and Drink as Usual After Teeth Whitening?

Dr. Reyhani, Dr. Hakimzadeh and our team will discuss your after-care with you. Each treatment comes with particular directions. In general, because whitening opens the pores of your teeth, leaving them more susceptible to staining, you will need to avoid certain foods for a few days. Red wine, chocolate, coffee, and tea are among the common offenders. Brush and floss regularly to maintain your white smile. In addition, brush and rinse your teeth after consuming staining foods to reduce your chances of discoloration.

How long do the results last?

By following some simple post teeth whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, and occasional touch-ups with Sapphire take-home gel. These are professional formula products designed specifically to keep your teeth their brightest. They are available through our office.
