What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Drs. Ben Reyhani and Pasha Hakimzadeh understand that dental treatment can be intimidating. For this reason, we are proud to offer sedation dentistry at Smile Makers LA. You dentist will prescribe an anti-anxiety medication to take at home before your treatment. The exact effects will depend on the level of sedation you receive. In smaller doses, the medication will simply take the edge off of your nerves. In larger doses, it will induce a “twilight sleep.” Although you will technically be awake and able to answer questions, you will be mostly unaware of what is happening around you. Typically, when you wake up, you will remember little, if anything, of your treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation at our Smile Makers practice can have significant benefits for your smile. If anxiety has caused you to put off your dental treatment, you may be at a higher risk for decay and tooth loss. With sedation, you can receive the care you need to prevent dental damage. Alternatively, you may have already suffered dental damage, and you are now struggling with the embarrassment of a compromised smile. Thanks to oral sedation, you can receive hassle-free treatment to restore your smile and self-confidence.

Am I a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is especially helpful if you suffer from dental anxiety. If you experience any of the following symptoms, sedation may be right for you:

  • Preoccupation with your upcoming dental treatment
  • Difficulty sleeping the night before an exam or procedure
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Nausea
  • Difficulty functioning as you anticipate your dental visit

Although our Smile Makers LA dentists typically reserve sedation for our anxious patients, the medications can also help if you are preparing for an extensive dental treatment, such as full mouth reconstruction. Dr. Reyhani or Dr. Hakimzadeh will discuss this possibility at your initial consultation.

What Causes Dental Anxiety?

Dental anxiety can arise because of many different factors. However, one thing remains constant – it is not your fault! Causes of dental anxiety include:

  • Popular myths regarding the difficulty of dental care
  • Stories told by others
  • A bad experience in the past
  • Claustrophobia
  • Embarrassment

Whatever the causes of your anxiety, our dentists will provide compassionate and non-judgmental care.

Can I Drive Home after My Treatment?

Our dentists use gentle, yet highly effective, oral medications that stay in your system for several hours. In this way, they can ensure that you remain fully sedated during your treatment. However, this also means that you will not be able to drive to and from our office. Fortunately, our in-house concierge will happily arrange a ride for you. It is just one more way we are committed to making your dental treatment pleasant and stress-free.

Will I Feel Any Pain during My Visit?

Sedation dentistry at Smile Makers LA is extremely effective. You will experience very little discomfort during your treatment. In most cases, the only sensation you will notice is a feeling of slight pressure. You will probably not remember it when the medication wears off.
